japanese producer takuya matsumoto first surfaced back in 2001 on a split release with compatriot kouji nagahashi (seek out the rubicon) but its more recently hes been getting the attention his classy house productions deserve.

jack cutter is a songwriter and guitarist based in the san francisco bay area in california. he started with a $5 banjo just after finishing high school. in university, during the late 60’s, he performed with bar bands in buffalo, new york. after completing university and a year as an aerospace engineer, he decided that attack helicopters were not really what the world needed and so he headed off to california in pursuit of music and mystic times. fast forward to fall 2014: jack is playing his quintessential tune, ‘gift of our fathers’ in the sf bart subway to an onslaught of morning commuters when he was spotted by 40 thieves. eureka! love at first sight and in the next few months, two of jack’s original acoustic pieces were given the 40 thieves treatment. enter david sanderson aka david harks, a singer, songwriter, producer and label curator from the east sussex region of the uk. ‘having fallen in love with the cosmic boogie (of 40 thieves classic ‘backward love’) i really felt i would love nothing more than to write a tune with them. layne got back in touch with a track he was working on entitled serpent strut with jack cutter and we worked via email over a few months to brew up that misty soul.’ deep, stony, psychedelic, drawing from the well of hawkwind, joni mitchell, david crosby, baffo banfi and tolkien-tinged acoustic led zep, the proof of concept is now complete and in the capable and loving hands of claremont 56.

having debuted on valcrond video label last year with the immured 12- under her familiar xosar alias, sheela rahman now returns to the platform for some shared make-believe with founder luke wyatt for new project body tools. taking a catalogue number as its title, this two track 12inch follows a succession of body tools radio broadcasts on berlin community radio and showcases a softer, more hypnotic side which in the case of lead track locusts & lions hits hard when the poignant piano makes its presence felt. brave channels a strange, modern kosmische vibe that will really hit the spot deep in the mix.

for the second release on her return to disorder label, helena hauff taps into the dark underbelly of the athens techno scene and presents the undoubted talents of greek producer morah. a resident at athens party phormix, morah has clearly been crafting his productions skills in private for some time as this three track 12inch is a powerful display of techno at its dankest. solution sets the tone, dipping into gnarled acid electro that seems to teeter on the brink of all out chaos with fellow a-side track take all similarly nasty. morah gets a chance to show his more experimental side with up in flames, a scorched exercise in freeform electronics with some particularly haunting vocals.

mastermaster kicks things off and drives a shifting sequence through a lo-fi break, plodding piano notes and a clipped, lively vocal hook before -bruce wayne- melds spring reverb and squelching flangers to treat guitar riffs and more 80s drums. eerily wobbling synths shimmer over head before -hornet green- drives a sprung kick under tense, soundtrack synth tones and a sandy shuffle as a cinematic pursuit is rendered. -valium- then sets sultry vocals floating through more hazy drum breaks and softly shifting chords. rhythmic variation and more vintage effects wade in and round off off a refreshing package of rich and intriguing gems and another fine addition to the charlois series.

after making a great impression with its first ep, giant records serves up a second hot helping of house music from boss man grant dell, complete with fresh remixes by scottish techno stalwarts silicone soul. dell, also known as chicago transit authority, has been doing his do for 25 years now. as a dj he is at home in clubs in ibiza and barcelona as well as around the rest of europe, and is someone who always prefers to push his own brand of widely infused and influenced music than his own profile. once again here he comes up trumps with the emotive, glowing house cut ‘in your mind’. with a neat bassline and mid tempo house drums, subtle but effective synth smears add warmth and colour to the groove, whilst soul fuelled vocals add a real sense of personality. this is sure to get people grooving at any hour and comes with grant’s own space echo remix. as the title suggests it’s a more dubby and reverb rich affair with cosmic signifiers and sci-fi vibes pervading from start to finish. silicone soul need little introduction having been at the heart of real deep house and techno for decades on the soma label. their first remix is a darkroom dub - named after their own label - and is a seductively slo-mo and lazily unfolding house cut with languid synths that really suck you in. their lush hypnohouse mix is then a twinkling, late night bit of melodically rich deep house with starry skies twinkling above sombre chords. this is a patiently served but hugely alluring ep that is stuffed with plenty of tender feeling. one again then, both grant and giant have come up with the goods.

gary martin releases his second sequential ep on motech records, the *this is it* ep. the ep features two more exclusive tracks, *this is it* a driving composition accented with piano and synth patterns and subtle funky movement, and *galaxy style* a percussive, building composition expertly laced with muted samples and synth progressions.

brazilian disco boogie sounds, is a compilation that brings together nine of the most important and obscure hits of the brazilian funk-boogie-disco scene during the years of 1978 to 1982. jùnior santos is a carioca drummer since his 15 years old, and is today a respected vinyl collector and music researcher. more than anything, he is carried on by the love of brazilian music, which has never been forgotten.

although still relatively young, matt star started his career in the late nineties followed by his first vinyl release in 2006. his music has since appeared on the likes of hypercolour, cocoon, repeat music, rawax and many more. following an appearance on the label as part of our latest mix cd (leftback vol.1) matt now joins the leftback roster for his first full ep on the label accompanied by a remix by label heads michael mclardy & dudley strangeways

a ship called misterio takes us on a journey to the darker and harder spaces of noon records. where the last releases have been more dreamy and funky, this ep is nothing but techno at its finest. a ship called misterio takes off from the very depths of dissonant frequencies and builds up into a massive rolling drum pattern, distorted hooks and a hi-hat thunderstorm. be warned: this track doesn t show any mercy. a true peak-time record and nothing but dynamite for the dance floor.

theyre young and tough, and especially wonderful too, easily one of the most compelling harmony soul groups to ever hail from the windy city! the sets a chicago soul gem from the early 70s, recorded with a laidback, slightly tripped-out vibe thats different than the tighter styles of other groups from the same scene, definitely righteous at points, with some of the superbad modes you might hear from an east coast lineup like the delfonics or soul generation, especially when they were trying to get a bit more conscious in their message. arrangements are great – handled by tom tom washington, eugene record, and cliff davis, very much at the best brunswick mode, but again with a deeper sort of vibe too. the title cuts a monster, and a very fitting follow-up to their earlier sly, slick, & wicked track – and the album features 2 versions (vocal and instrumental) of a cut called this is the lost generation, a very righteous soul groove with a heavy production tip.

keeping the concept of a tight knit family of artists, up next on sol asylum is the follow up ep for the dilated pupils titled introducing remi. this collective of likeminded artists from the netherlands return to the label with a solid four-track ep that shows their range and diversity as producers. moving full speed ahead we start off with “remi at 21.16” a track that instantly hypnotizes you on the dance floor with its echoing harmonic synths and a complex metallic snare pattern. the track is a slow burner that explodes when the dirty analog kick, swinging bassline, and filtered percussion melt into an atomic fusion. next we take it to the next level with “do” its underwater bubbling percussion, bleeping stabs and eerie synth take us to the far off corners of space with just enough acid to keep our heads down and grooving to the strobe light in a dark room. as we move into fall with “october times” a tightly woven groove and galloping kicks push us into more experimental territory with soaring vintage synths that create tension and finesse at the same time. finally we finishing things off with the esoteric vibes of “suque” this deep and dirty track channels the positive force from another realm, which is the perfect match for the inspiriting concept of sol asylum.

three tracks here evoking familiar feelings heard before but still somehow they all sound fresh and drag you in wanting for more. as if this wouldn t do it, there is first but, not last appearance for barba label by mighty jtc who needs no further introduction delivering a remix. this time he cleverly uses sparse but recognizable parts of title track which he then transforms into relentless floor shaker where detroit meets chicago, if any such comparison needs to be made. aquatic stuff !

tresor records is proud to welcome shao yanpeng, the first chinese artist to enter the label�fs star-studded roster. shao is based in be.ing, china, where he has been making electronic music since 2002, and pursues his career as a producer and successful sound designer. with ‘doppler shift pt.1�’ shao continues to experiment with various facets of electronic music. on the a-side, ‘sensi’ dives straight into feverish synth work which halts into a suspenseful ascension to the climax. on the flip, ‘reflection pt.2’ takes on a more serene atmosphere slowly building and adding textures as the track progresses into a meticulously built composition.

mysterious hardware tinkerer stephan stl laubner is back with a 3 track + locked groove ep on the london based imprint mutual friend recordings entitled listen up! mind puzzlin is exactly that with a luscious lead line that will twist your head accomponied by stls signature rough and overdriven percussion. smile function has a more ominous tone with repeated guitar plucks that plant themselves into your consciousness. stl builds the groove expertly whilst retaining an other-worldly feel to the track. wrong is a real groover with a growling bassline accomponied by weird and wonderful interwoven patterns coaxed out of stls synths. the locked groove, titled listen up! loop is a nice bonus for the more adventurous dj out there.

keeping the momentum going seems fairly easy for barac as he unveils the long awaited second ep on his moment imprint. last years have seen barac evolve in a very lucrative way, yet only his best productions seem to be making their way top. it is clearly the case for this second ep which features two of his solo masterpieces. moment of clarity is electronic poetry at its best. barac delivers the proverbial summer sunrise directly into your speakers and ultimately into your heart. this track is meant to never be forgotten. without changing the soundscape too much barac has a slightly different approach on side b. things get a little more serious with sun & following being driven by a catchy bass and a haunting atmosphere. this tune is as bomb in the night as the other one is in the daylight.

2015 repress. its been four years since my last own ep on stockholm ltd. the main reason for this is that i have been surrounded by music that has inspired me much more than my own. this ep was written and produced with strict narrow frames and a huge amount of frustration. i was tired of waiting for the inspiration to kick in, then suddenly it appeared with a strength that i havent felt for long time. im now curious for more. while sketching the title track, >wyatt arp<, i couldnt get detroit legend, terrence dixon, out of my mind. terrence is a long time hero of mine, and an artist that always stays on the true side of what we do while most of us occasionally leave our paths. i had to ask him to do a rework. / par grindvik

iyewaye, oliver koletzkis first release after the autobiographical i am ok album, introduced a new facet of the artist’s sound. the ep catered to a darker and more raw aesthetic, a direction followed and deepened by the four remixes. first up is the title track iyewaye, turned into a lengthy tech infused introspection by hatzler. loosely centered around the initial vocals, loco & jams makeover explores the tracks captivating snappy narrative. the more rhythm focused ipuza gets a special treatment from hidden empire who dial up the aggression of the percussion. zakari & blange downplay the tracks initial exotic elements, focusing on the rattling synths and giving it a late-night dancefloor rework.

after a series of mesmerising (and massive) eps under his more disco orientated yse saint laur ant moniker pressed for time label head ant plate is back in his deep house mode with an ep of yse goodness no messing about with the opener this loves the same yse goes straight in there with some dancefloor heat that has enough quirk to counteract the house swing. 9828 is all badboy garridge wonk with some excellent detuned chords and a catchy, nagging vocal refrain - swag. on the flip, i gave you my is proper deep house (as in it s actually deep) with some trademark yse chords, blissed out vocal samples and great drum programming. night prescription rounds things off with a homage to the classic us house sound. think chuggles i remember dance but with an east midlands twist.

devoted to the art of movement is the first record from nss (no spiritual surrender) a duo formed by j.c. (ahd co-owner together with damian schwartz) and kastil this e.p. centers it s attention towards electro, but continue ahds heritage of giving a twist to those 90s sounds that influenced us so much, from early idm to detroit, all is present here. the opening track is the one that gives the ep it s name, an acid stomper build around an electro beat that builds up and down fiercely. the track maintains its tension throughout its whole length by building strings and arpeggios over its acid sequence, never transferring its beat to a straight kick, capturing the attention since its first second. proposed playground is build around a more steady electro beat, strings and sounds merge themselves around the beat to create a beautifully hypnotic piece where where some background melodies tickle our ears bringing memories from idm golden years. zero one is closing track, without leaving the electro rhythms the defined the whole ep the track is build around a phrenetic synth sequence that sets the path for the whole length, rhythms are rough and strong and its syncopated hitting adds emphasis on that frenzy atmosphere since its first second till the last.

alan fitzpatrick makes a triumphant return to the scene-leading imprint this august. the typically bombastic three-tracker of explosive, crowd-moving techno opens with love siren packed with all the power and punch required to knock over festival crowds as it systematically builds and drops, this is one for the big open air stages. ‘u said u is a massively hyped track that has been the subject of huge fan-demand since it first featured on beyer s drumcode radio in january. rumours wraps things up in slightly more understated but non-the-less effective fashion with its drawn out, tension building intro mushrooming into a crescendo of sleazy chords and sparking melodies

dynarec started making music in 1994. his productions, influenced by drexciya and dopplereffekt, are a mix of deep atmospheric pads and leads with – cool to very heavy – drums.his first releases on delsin in 2003 and 2004 were picked up by dj’s such as laurent garnier and dave clarke. after some more records on nature and kondi, he started his own « vaporwave » label in 2005, four records were released to date. he is able to fill in some very emotional and melodic workout that makes you wonder, how is he able to do that? playing piano since he was 6 years old could be an answer to his performing skills. apart from delsin, nature and kondi, he has also released on southern outpost, electrix and lately, on keith tucker’s puzzlebox label (us) and on cultivated electronics (uk). dynarec also releases music under the names of speakwave and chris kalera. he has performed worldwide, including festivals such as the famous stereolize, in paris, and the amsterdam dance event, amongst others.

on this new record hailing from aarhus, central delivers a more or less floor friendly collection of works. with his curious and unorthodox approach to dance music, this ep offers 4 very different pieces of music. the opening track fresh context a vivid yet robust house jam is followed by the spontaneous and unpolished gentle vertigo. b side starts off with fell, a moody and eerie spin in experimento land. the final track kessem is a melodic and punchy cut. central delivered releases on nord records and yield earlier this year, revealing respectively a darker techno game and a loose house vibe. to those who arent familiar with help recordings, central s widespread sound offers a premium introduction to the labels output. playful yet serious.
